I think you're best bet would be a Restrictive Endorsement, if all they will give you is a verbal agreement.

Procedure,
1) Go to your bank and get a Cashiers check and make it out for the agreed upon amount.

2) On the back, above where it would be endorsed, write this (write small); By accepting these funds, you agree this account is paid in full, without protest and that you will remove this account from each Credit Bureau. Cashing of this check constitues previous agreement to terms. No collection effort from you or your assignees may be attempted any further.

3) Make a copy of the Check Front & Back for your records. Tell the bank you want a copy of this check and endorsements, just as soon as it clears
the bank.

If you need to write below the signature line you can. Try to get as much above the signature line as possible and make sure you can read it.

Send the check and a letter to them, going over your previous verbal agreement, and reference the Restrictive Endorsement. Make sure and send it CRRR. Make a copy of your letter also.

This should take care of this situation.
