I am in Iowa (100% Homestead exemption). One could argue that I used some of the proceeds of the loan to save up for a new house. I got the 3rd mortgage at the end of 2001 and built a new house at the end of 2002. I don't even want the old house anymore and declared my new one as my homestead right away so I would be protected.
