More and more firms are checking credit reports now and it could cost you a job. How much will the bad credit influence the employers decision will depend on how much responsibility you will be having and what their criteria is. Yes, it can hurt. Collections and chargeoffs hurt the most, especially if they are unpaid since many employers associate these two items with lack of keeping your word and inability to manage money. However, as a consumer, if you have fixed your credit by paying all past due debts, or are making the attempt, you can also insert in your credit file a letter of explanation explaining your bad period. Was laid off from work, etc.
