Employment credit checks do show up on your credit reports as "Inquiries" which can stay on your credit report for a year. I am not sure but I think that they fall into the same kind of inquiry that mortgage applications and credit checks fall into. "Hard Inquiries".

For those collection agencies that have subscribed to the credit bureaus information services and reporting services, they will be alerted to all employment inquiries and mortgage inquiries. They are keenly interested in any kind of consumer activity regarding employment applications, mortgage applications, etc. If you have accounts in collections and your potential employer does a credit check on you, one way of knowing that they did so is if you have the collection agencies subscribing to the credit bureaus popping up and checking your report.

Also if you subscribe to a credit reporting service yourself so you can monitor your own credit report, you will be able to determine which employer does a credit check and which will not. Because if they do a credit check, they have to list it on your credit report.
