I had lots of cards with high balances, especially after interest accrued for almost four years. My strategy was to ignore collection agents. I had caller ID. I just would not talk to them since I learned early on that my circumstances made no difference. I could not pay and that was that. I was eventually sued by First Resolution, but I quickly filed Chapter 7 and that was that. They were the only ones that sued. Pre bankrupcy planing is legal. I never said one word to the people at First Resolution, and then I changed my phone number. They were really mad, called my neighbor and yelled at him. I was ready to be sued. Just get your eggs in a row and be prepared. Legal advice is always a good idea. Wish I had had this forum at that time. I didn't though.
