I have to butt in here for a minute. Validation is useful and it is a great weapon to use. It is also your right as a consumer to validate.

I know that people have differing opinions on this one, so I will weigh in with mine. Validation in my opinion is the weapon to use when the CA is threatening to sue.

I advocate sending in a request for validation CRRR ONE TIME only and a limited cease and desist letter. I say this because it covers your bases in the future in the event that they don't validate and take you to court. It could be an ace in the hole and if I was facing significant debt, I would want every ace in the hole I can get just in case I need them.

If you requested validation and they didn't provide it and then sue them, that is something you can use. It should also stall the more professional collection agencies since your account will be in dispute status and they won't be able to legally call you until they have validated.

I also believe in validation as a means of forcing them to show their hand. You want to know what they have.

I see validation should be used as a weapon when you are confronted and are being threatened by CA.

However, I do agree with WhyChat and others that if the CA hasn't contacted you yet, there is no threat. If they can't find a person, they can't sue a person (well maybe they can, but there would be some issues later on if the consumer wanted to press them), so I believe in the initial stages, get caller ID and lay low. Don't talk. Don't know your rights and be very silent and don't wake the beast. Don't apply for a new mortgage, a new job unless you have to, a new car loan, or anything. Don't try and make credit repairs. Just sit and wait it out being as little as possible.

Validation is like playing hardball. You don't play hardball unless you have to.
