Arbitration?

I am confused as to what arbitration on a credit card debt means. I signed a credit card application that calls for arbitration to resolve a defaulted debt. Does that mean they can sue me and get a judgment without any court process or appearance?

Please help me understand what the legal process is in arbitration and how it differs from the regular credit card debt? What are my rights? Thanks.
