Providian has so many utterly worthless charge-offs from the past few years that they’ve been sweeping them out the door to debt buyers for 5 cents on the dollar. None of the buyers get the required paperwork from Providian’s mess to prevail in any lawsuits other than default judgments. Hudson and Keyes is an Ohio collection agency working some portfolio of debt bought by some debt buyer. Hence “we are authorized by our client to sue.” (If Providian still owned the debt, they’d be the ones suing.) Let them. Not likely, but if they feel lucky enough to actually sue, fight them in court. You’ll win. Just ask them to prove it’s your account with your signed application, statements, and receipts. Fat chance Providian could even find them if they were suing, so they won’t exert any effort to find them for some pennies on the dollar debt buyer. You’d be surprised how completely fouled up the “back rooms” are at some banks.
