I had an account with FirstSelect that I worked out a payment arrangement of $100 a month and paid faithfully. One month I called to make my phone payment and was told my account had been sold. Who they'd sold it to was not listed in the computer. I waited to hear via mail. Nothing for a couple of months. I called FirstSelect back and finally they were able to tell me my account had been sold to Credigy and their phone number. I called the number, held for a while, then was asked to leave a message. I did so, leaving my name and supposed account number.

I heard nothing for 6 months. Then tonight, Credigy calls me up and says I need to work out a payment plan. I tell them how much I make and how much my bills are, and that my husband is unemployed right now. I said, can we just make it $100 a month like First Select. She comes back and says I need to make 6 payments of $700 each, and that I need to get a bank loan (yeah right)or press my family for the money (poor) or they will take action against me.

What on earth can I do? I can't stomach declaring bankruptcy over $5000.
