I think it was a bad idea to close the account. If your account was there one day and then after you receive the garnishment notice it was closed and the court believes you did that solely to avoid having it garnished, there may be penalties for willfully defying the court.

In real terms a judgment is something that a court *orders* against people. The judge has ORDERED you to pay. So, if you take deliberate steps to avoid complying with the judge's order, there can be more trouble waiting for you. And, that kinda trouble may be worse than what you've got now.

Withdrawing the majority of the money in the account would have been enough to accomplish your goal without tipping them off to the fact that you have money that is now *elsewhere*.

If I were you, I would make a decision as to how much money I want to sacrifice to the judgment and leave *that* in the account.

The best way to keep your money away from your judgment creditors is to pay your bills--pay them in advance if you have to.

For instance, I paid my current apt lease in advance. I also pay my car insurance in advance. There's nothing wrong with that.

I like the freedom of knowing that my bills are paid up. It makes budgeting so much easier. That's why I do it and there's nothing wrong with that. ;) The by-product of that is that there won't be much in my accounts for them to take. I keep the receipts safe so I can prove where the money went, etc.

I have developed a history of paying in advance, so it's not something that a creditor can jump up and say, "She's defying the court!" However, if I were to suddenly close all of my accounts--yeah, there'd be some trouble there.
