There are steps to follow. You dispute with the credit bureaus. Many times they verify by the info on your credit file. If you requested validation from an OC, CRRR, and the account is not marked in dispute by the Original Creditor, you have a violation, and that in turn can sometimes help you have the account removed. You've got to understand that there are many different ways for an account to go away.
