The reason they (Why Chat and others) say you shouldn't validate within SOL is because (I believe) it'll let the creditors know that you're not just another ignorant debtor who isn't aware of his/her rights, and who can therefore be easily intimated into paying according to their terms. Which means they'll need to sue to get you to pay. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Of course, whether an agency will sue depends on a lot of factors, such as amount of debt, how recently it charged off, where do you live, what your credit report looks like and how likely they are to collect anything, how much they already know about (i.e. do they just have an address, or do they also have work/home phone, employer info, bank info, etc.).

You should also know that any advice given here is not legal advice and should be taken with a grain of salt. It is really hard to give specific advice when you don't know all the details. So I would treat anything generally and just use what you get here to do further investigation with. There are no cookie-cutter answers.

Since people post here anonymously, don't give out any personal information to ANYBODY. We just that CAK turned out to be a collection troll, even though he appeared to be a debtor's best friend. If you need legal advice, I believe WhyChat's website has links to attorney referrals. Once you have an attorney-client confidential relationship with a licensed attorney, THEN give out specific/personal information. Again, trust no one on this site with personal information. It might be obvious, but it needs to be said again and again.
