Private companies are free to gather and keep data as long as they want and they can even sell the information they gather on you.

Opting out only prevents the credit bureaus from selling your information to marketing companies for promotional purposes. It does not prevent the collection agencies that are ALREADY Tied in the system through your account from getting information on you and OPTING OUT DOES NOT PREVENT companies other than the CREDIT BUREAUS from selling and trading information to you.

I would suggest you go to the Optout site at http://opt-out.cdt.org/. Opting out of the credit bureaus is one way of keeping your data from falling into the wrong hands. But it is not foolproof. YOu have to contact each data resource center and optout individually. Opt out on the lists online that collect data.

www.businesscredit.com gathers a bunch of marketing data that they sell to collection agencies as well as marketing companies. Opting Out has to be done on a widespread scale and opting out at the credit level does not prevent third parties who already have your data from sharing and from popping up to poison your file.
