It means taking countermeasures. When money is involved, ethics go out of the window. When a creditor wants his money and you can't pay, he is going to want to do whatever means it takes to get the judgment. He is not your family. It does not matter to him that you have had twenty + years of a good business relationship with him. It is all irrelevant.

You need to go into defensive modes.

Pull your credit report at least once a year. Subscribe to a credit monitoring service if you have to. Don't make any activity or waves. Every three months or so, invest in a nationwide judgment or lien search on your social security number (if you have assets) to see if they are playing sneaky games and trying to get judgments served at old addresses or incorrect addresses. Leave nothing to chance.

Expect them to break the law and do whatever you have to do to protect your assets. They will show no MERCY if you owe the debt. They won't care if you have a sick spouse at home who can't work and needs medication to live. They won't care if you are one step away from losing your job or your home. If they knew that you lived in a homeless shelter and they had a way to go in and gather the money you collected from panhandling, they would sieze that too!
