Should I request validation or not?

With all the discussion about validation lately, I'm not sure what to do here. I just got a collection letter from a CA that is about an hour away from me. I'm in Ohio and the debt is over 5 years old. I was planning on requesting validation to see what they send, if anything, and follow up with the SOL letter if necessary. When I request validation from most CAs, I usually never hear back from them again, so this has been working for me.

Since it seems like lawyers in all states (and the AG offices)seem to think that a CC falls under a written contract, I'm a bit nervous about just sending the SOL letter right away. I did that once and it didn't work out very well for me.

Thanks!
