In CA, they can garnish up to 25% of your post-tax W2 income. If you're on a 1099 basis, you might be off their radar screen since it's harder to locate (unless they do a debtor's exam). Either way, an unsecured creditor needs a judgement before they can do anything like that, which turns them into judgement creditors and gives them a lot more ways to legally seize your wages and assets. The IRS can garnish your wages without a judgement, and they can take a lot more than 25% from what I understand. However, if your wages are already being garnished 25% (in CA for example), that's the most you're judgement creditors can take, it doesn't matter how many there are.
