Collections are not allowed to talk to anyone abut your debt but you and your spouse. Leaving a message of that nature on your machine for anyone to hear was a violation of the law. I think you need to ask Why Chat about that when he returns. I would also suggest that you do not talk to these people. You don't need the aggravation.
