Debt Negotiations

Are debt negotiations companies like this one (http://www.hoffmanbrinker.com/) for real, or are they a scam?

The reason I'm asking is that I have a lot of debt and I want to be pro-active in terms of handling it, as opposed to trying to sit out the SOL and hoping someone doesn't sue me. I have about 10 unsecured credit accts, and nearly all have been charged off. I'd prefer not to declare BK, and most CCCS programs won't accept me (they require minimum payments just like regular creditors; not too surprising since they're funded by banks). Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Has anyone tried debt negotiation with success?
