Well, get the deal in writing. Make sure the agreement reads that they'll not sell, transfer or, assign the unsettled balance to any third party debt collector or, bad debt buyer.
If you're sure you'll move this quickly on buying a home, you'll need to settle old collections. If you can wait until the SOL runs, you may be able to dispute/validate/verify it away.
