There is a lot of psychology in debt collection. I checked the garnishment laws on Why Chat's web site and it said to check federal law. I don't know what that means, but I am sure someone else will help you. It did say that garnishment was limited to once a month. My guess is that they will do whatever they think will get them the most money the fastest way possible. If they can garnish for a decent amount of money each month, then I think they will. I had the same attitude about having a lien on my property, my attorney told me not to let them get a lien on my property. I would definitely hire an attorney if I was in your shoes. Having an attorney is a psychological block to collection agents. It's puts them on notice that they cannot abuse you or the law. It also lets them know that you are not going to cave into their threats easily. It's just psychology.
