Close five credit card accounts that are presently maxxed out?

I'm going to apply for a home equity loan soon, and am trying everything I can to get my score up. I have seven credit cards. All the cards are maxed out. I will only be using two cards in the future. Will closing the five credit card accounts that are presently maxxed out and continue making the monthly payments help my credit score? Or would it be better for my score to leave the cards open and not use them. Thanks.
