It may just be one of many lawyers who let collection agencies use the attorney letterhead to scare you without having any intention or ability to actually sue you.

Did the letter say it was on behalf of Direct Merchants or perhaps did it say something like CACV or Collect America?

Check to see if the lawyer is one of these lawyers.
