Beneficial/HFC & First USA

On my credit reports, I have one 30 day late from 1999 for Beneficial/Household Finance, and one 30 day/60 day late on First USA Visa from 2001. After these incidences, both accounts were immediately brought and kept current. The HFC loan was paid in full 3 months later, and I have continued to use the First USA Visa, always paying on time and the balance of that now is also zero. My question is, I've recently read about these "goodwill letters", which I'd like to try with these 2 companies...has anyone had success with either of these creditors? I do have some extenuating circumstances that I can prove with documentation that caused me to be late on those payments. Should I give it a try, or just not worry about it since both were over two years ago?
