I had a Radio Shack account that was removed from my credit report after seven years. Westmoreland, a division of CapitalOne purchased this account. I received a letter from them in July 2003 requesting that I pay them the balance I owe Radio Shack. I submitted a verification request in writing and did not hear back. I called them in August and asked about the status and they said to give them 30 days. Sometime in the fall, I called again and they told me that they would respond in writing to verify that I owed the money. I received nothing from them until December. At which point, I received another letter similar to the one I got in July that said they purchased the account and that I owed them money. I also got a copy of my credit report and they are on it. It looks as though I transferred the balance of my Radio Shack account to them and it is a current credit card. I never signed anything like this and I am still waiting on verification. I got scared and called Westmoreland to work out a payment plan. The man I spoke with said that since July, Westmoreland had sold and repurchased the account and that I am technically a new account. They then sent me a letter that says it has come to their attention that I am disputing this charge. (I did in July and August.) What do I do? I am disputing the entry on my credit report. I do owe Radio Shack money, but I am disputing the amount. I intend to repay the debt, that is not the issue, I just don't want this on my CR. Isn't this illegal????
