When you open up a new bank account, there's all kinds of extra rules about funds availability for the first 30 days. Add to that the fact that your check is out of state, it's going to take a long time for that thing to clear the bank.

You could end up really shooting yourself in the foot on this if you are not careful.

Have you considered using a check casher, instead? A trusted friend perhaps?
