Something that people at creditboards have used with some success: check and see if the ca is operating legally in your state.
www.lawdog.com and click on state laws. Then, select the state and you'll see a seltion for both debt collection and collection agencies. You'll be surprised how many can't be bothered to simply operate legally in your state.
Also, know your state law. Texas, Pa. and Az. among others have a state version of the FDCPA and is in some ways more strict than Federal.
