that is very odd.

the only thing i can think of, is that the debt belongs to someone with the same name as your friend's son. this error often occurs, especially to people with common names, such as "john smith".

it would not appear on the credit report as it is way over 7 years old.

but, the fact is, the SOL has long expired (no state has an SOL for that long). you may first want to say the debt is not yours, along with using the SOL letter.

yes, you do have to be servied first. if that attorney really did send any notice, ask him for a copy of it.
