My advice would be to ingorne, but protect your assets. I don't mean hide assets, I mean make them exempt. CAs have all sort of gimicks designed to worry you into paying. I would dial information, and ask for a listing for McDowell and Associates in Atlanta. See what you come up with. Also, check on Why chat's web site and see if a collection agents have to be licensed in GA to sue there. Are these individual or joint accounts? The only problem I see is that since you are retired you probably own your home. If individual debts, talk to a bankrupcy attorney and see what he recommends. The idea being to become judgement proof if you are sued. Maybe you'll get some better ideas. That's my 2cents. Good Luck
