This site and the people it contains is far greater a teaching tool than he could ever get in school in regards to financial matters.
He reads the posts and sees with his own eyes how people can actually talk themselves out of paying for their debts.
A lot of people come to this board asking how to settle on their debts and in a short while they are convinced by the "regulars" that they should never pay them back or treated in a hostile fashion if they do decide to pay. They are told to see a nice doctor and get there head examined.
I was one of those people back in 2001, I was scorned and black listed.

Each day when I call and ask people what their intentions are in regards to their outstanding debt they all say the same thing THAT THEY WANT TO PAY. It is only on this site that I see people that say they DO NOT WANT TO PAY.
My job is to call on debts that are just recently charged off, still well with in the sol. We settle for between 30 and 55 percent of the outstanding balance. I work with people I can accept smaller payments over time, I can accept a settlement in three months time. I try to do everything I can to make this as painless as possible without making it so that they can not buy groceries and pay for the heat. If they can not do anything at all the call ends, I tell them to call me if their situation changes and they can do a settlement.

Paying stops the calls, gets them out of collections and provides them with peace. A life that includes being able to hear the telephone ring without fear and apprehensions. A life that makes going to the mail box a pleasant experience instead of a dreaded occurrence each and every day.

As far as I am concerned this board represents a small percentile of people that truly do not want to pay on their debts.
I talk to hundreds of people weekly and very rarely do I have someone state that they are refusing to pay back their cc debts. I have been able to change the minds of these people by simply being kind to them and helping them to figure out a re payment plan. these people are so grateful to me for listening to them and helping them out of this mess.

If you are having a tough time with the collection personal and you truly want to make a settlement perhaps you should phone into the agency you are with and ask to speak to the floor manager. Ask him to assign a collector to you that has a kind style of collections and will work with you. You might be surprised to see how fast you will get someone willing to work with you and be empathic to your situation.

Examples of settlements.

Balance 1,000 -interest-25.90 (highest the client charges) repayment can be 50 a month but should be greater due to the large interest charge.
Or
Balance 1,000 settlement of 300.00 to 570.00 paid in three payments within 45 days to three months.
