Collection after 7 years

Recently I received a letter from a debt collector regarding a school that I attended over 7 years ago.The amount owed has not been reported to my credit until just recently. I believe that there is a time-limit on how long a company can wait to collect on a debt but I am not sure. Can someone please help me!!!! I've disputed this with Experian but they show that the debt will remain so what do I do? You can email any responses directly to my email address if you can help me.
