I take it you got a nasty letter from AmEx with that 'your debt is in legal default' verbage ? Its a standard default letter, meant to scare you.

How long has it been since you last paid them ?
How much do you owe ?

AmEX is a tough nut to crack. Are you able to pay them anything ?

Have you asked for a hardship program ?
