Co signed on auto loan that defaulted

I co signed an auto loan for someone I no longer talk to. He blatently told me he didn't want the car anymore and would stop paying for it. He let it get reposessed, then sold at auction for less than half of what was left on the loan. I'm now stuck with $8500.00 in debt. Did have the money then and I still don't.
Anything legal I can do? Any help would be apreciated
