Ex-spouse debt??

My husband has about $12k in CC debt that his ex-wife ran up in his name without his knowledge. One of his requests during his divorce settlement was that she assume all responsibility for these debts. However, after about 2 years of getting no where with her or the creditors (his lawyer was an idiot) he just wanted a divorce and out of the situation. We live in Kentucky where all CC debts assumed during a marriage are the responsibility of both spouses or whichever one they think they can sqeeze money out of. My husband has never signed anything requesting any of these CC nor has he ever used them. What do these companies have to prove for him to be liable? Can we request validation? If so, what do they have to provide? These debts are approx 3-4 years old and have been acquired by companies like Sherman and NCO. The SOL in Kentucky is 5 years. Can we hold them off that long and just say forget it? They are already charge offs on his credit so I don't see how wasting our money is going to help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
