HELP!!! Need advice urgently

In the early 90's I attended a Jr College and got a small loan with them which was not a federal student loan. I was unable to pay and now after all these years a CA has been trying to collect this debt. Should I try to make repayment arrangements with them since I now want to take a few classes with the same school??? If this debt is not currently showing on my credit report, can they reinstate it if I start making payments?
