Yeah, it can get really nasty.

I've got a tale to tell regarding Wells Fargo. 25+ years ago I was having a problem with the IRS, trying to make arrangements to pay them, when without a judgment they hit my Wells Fargo checking account and cleared it out. I was just about ready to make a deposit when I found this out and saved that money from going to them.

Anyway, I had 2 outstanding checks. I asked the bank if there was anyway I could cover the checks. They said no, any money put in the bank would have to go to the IRS. So I would need to contact the 2 companies I wrote the check to. (I did take care of it with them eventually.)

So then the checks hit the bank. I had Mastercard overdraft protection on my account. So what does Wells do? They kick in the money to cover the checks (plus the usual overdraft charge) and then THEY SENT THE MONEY TO THE IRS. Yeah, that's right. IRS was charging on my Mastercard without my permission.

I was livid. I'm literally screaming at the bank rep (in person, not over the phone). They basically tell me to suck it up and there is nothing I can do about it. Oh yeah? I immediately closed the account and I will deal with Wells only when Hell freezes over. Oh wait a minute, the pope says there is no burning hell. Well, no way on earth will they ever get my business. If they were to buy out my bank, those accounts would be closed faster than the speed of light. I don't care the affect on my credit.

So as previously described, get the money out of there NOW. They do NOT need to have a judgment to freeze your account.
