Time limit for collectors after asking for validation

I recieved a summons from the court for a debt that I have been asking for validation on sense July of last year(2003). I have a certified letter mailed to another attorney in another state as well as again to the attorney sueing me now and one to the court, the last 2 being dated 12/09/03, the first dated in oct 2003. I still have not receieved valadation of this debt. I live in alabama, the debt is with Bank of America. How long can they legally wait before I can ask them to close this debt and remove it from my credit files?
