Was there a security deposit held by landlord? Did you do a walk through with landlord to verify condition of property and or damages when you left? Did you take dated pictures to show your position of condition? How long were you there?

Sounds like the landlord is trying to refurnish his apartment with new appliances and carpeting at your expense. Normal wear and tear in the course living in an apartment over a period of time is the landlord's expense. Unless he can show destruction of property--he can not force you to pay.
