What can a lawyer do

I have a lot of credit card debt, but also a lot of equity in my house. I don't want to take a chapter 7 or 13 and risk losing our family home! If I am sued by a creditor, can a lawyer help me work out a settlement without filing 7 or 13 or going to court? My state does NOT have the homestead law. I don't want to let anyone get a default judgement against me, but I can't afford to spend the money on a lawyer unless he/she can keep me out of court and out of bankruptcy.
