In 1994 a few checks were written in my name without my permission and I infomed the bank that I lost my purse and someone must have obtained my check book at that time and written the checks. As a result, the bank closed my account and after 7 years had passed I assumed that was the end of it since I had not heard anything else about the checks. Unfortunately, creditors are all now sending me intimidating letters demanding payment for these checks or they will take me to court. All 10 of these checks were written within a 7-10 day period and none of the checks exceeded $200 each. The highest check was $191. Six of of the checks were at one store, and four at other stores. If I am held responsible for these checks I'd like to know if crimminal charges can be brought against me. If I am only fined, will I be fined for each individual check or only once for all 10 checks and must the fine be paid all at once? I do not know what to do. The last few years I have been very ill, and my only source of income is from SSI and I have not worked in five years. I can't afford an attorney and have no money to pay for these checks, nor should I have to pay for them since I did not write them. The lawyers say that my signature looks like the signature on the checks and just will not believe me. I know for a fact I did not write those checks. One creditor said a summons was sent to me in 1996 for six of the checks which I supposedly signed for but do not remember. The case was dismissed for want of prosecution. What does that mean? I've also had a checking account with another bank for the last 5 years and because of that I was sure I was not being held responsible for those checks from 1994. I also live in the state of Illinois. If I go to court and tell the judge I'm only receiving ssi will the creditors look into all my assests regardless? Sincerely Yours, Tia
