In order to prove criminal bad check charges or check fraud against you they will have to prove criminal intent. Intent is amongst the toughest things to prove, and, since you reported the checks stolen there is no "intent" from you to defraud any company.

This smacks of a scumbag collector trying to scare you into paying. Bad check laws will vary from state to state, but the SOL for prosecution is generally anywhere from 1 to 3 years.

Unless you receive a certified letter or summons from the court don't worry about this. If you do receive a certified letter from the original company, the district attorney or if you receive a summons from the court talk with a lawyer. The lawyer can then present to the court that the checks were stolen. This case could easily be handled by a public defender.

If you are summoned to civil court, the same strategy would apply.

I am not a lawyer, I just work for them. So please get appropriate legal advice if you need to.
