Check Refusal

Here's an odd question that I have not been able to find a response too on FAQ's.

About 6 months ago, my son became ill and I had a lot of medical bills for him. I payed with my check and due to his illness, and having to take time off work, I was not paid as much as I was expecting and bounced 4 checks.

Now, I have paid all those checks off shortly after they happened (with in 2 months). So now do I have to wait 5 years before I can write another check? I know the the ChexSystem can deny me, but isn't it cruel and unusual punishment to have to have a check refused at every place I want to go?

Also, my checks don't work, but my ATM check card works at the same places that my checks were refused at. What gives?
