Why Chat or anyone duplicate items on credit report

Ok here is the deal. I have been looking over my credit report and this is what i've found. RJM acquisitions has an item in collection. I called them and they said that it was an account from fingerhut. I asked why the date open had changed to 2002 from atleast 1998. He said that Rjm had bought out Fingerhut and that they took over the account 8/1/2002. the origianl date was8/16/98. In texas there is a 4 year SOL if the comapny bought out fingerhut can they change the date on the account? Also this Item is on my credit under both RJM and fingerhut both with the same dates. If I pay the balance will it show on both places? Please, help me
