if you pay a CA, they can report it to the credit bureaus..if they do, that can re-start the 7-year clock.

i know this from experience...about two years ago, i had the same idea thinking paying off my collection or charge-off accounts would look better than a charge-off with a balance...wrong! once i paid off my charged-off american express card (balance got paid in full) to Plaza Associates...Plaza Associates reported it to the credit bureaus...now that will be on there for 7 years. if i had left that account alone, it would have been removed by now.
