Being sued for nonpayment.

Just received a lawsuit notice for non payment of credit card. Yes, they did send it to a CA and yes, I did pay them a few times, but stopped. Now they are suing me. The lawyer has $7000 in fees. It is this normal and should I contact him before finding a lawyer myself to try to make a payment arrangement. Not sure what to do. I want to make good on the original $12,000 and start to make payments but cannot afford the full amount. Any info. Lisa S.
