questions about chpt 13, collection agencies and suits

I have a high balance on a credit card which just became charged off, this month. I was unemployed but am now working again.

I want to pay this debt and work this out, without having to have my wages garnished (I dont want new employer to find out about this...).

What happens in a Cptr 13 filing? I tried to ask the collection agency if there is something I can do...but they told me that I had 'until' noon to give them the full amount or it is going to legal. And I will have a civil suit. The first time I heard from the CA was on Thurs am.

I still have not recieved anything in writing from them. They told me they mailed me a letter on the 28th.

Please help.
I live in NJ.
