ca's licensed in your state-how do you find out?

I'm in NY and ca's have to be licensed here. How do you find out if they are and if its current? Most ca's I'm dealing with are from other states, according to the papers I get in the mail. Just because they have a # written on the back of a piece of paper doesn't mean squat to me-I want to know they have a current license to even collect. Anyone know where to get this info from?
