Marvbear, the credit bureus (especially Experian) do have credit reporting services available for collections. A collection agency or a creditor can sign up for a service where they are tagged to the particular consumers account by social security. Whenever a consumer requests his credit report, makes any activity whatsoever, the subscriber is sent an email. Experian's site has this service described on its online site.

Whether or not they will know will depend on whether they are subscribed to this service or similar ones. I believe they all do if you will check their sites.
