HOW could you KNOW the amount was correct if they did not provide the appropriate information to you. HOW could you KNOW the account #09876543xxxxx was indeed yours if you did not see the documents you signed making it yours? How do your KNOW the collection agent has the RIGHT to collect the debt if they do not prove it to you? In my opinion the law should protect the consumer for these very reasons. They must prove they have the legal right to collect and they must prove the accounting for the amount they are seeking to collect is legal.

I dont know whether a Judge would just ask a question that way or not, but you are entitled to your SIDE being heard/presented and you should take opportunity of the protections afforded you by the law.

I am not an expert by any means, just my opinion.
