Depends on your state. Judgement (rule of thumb) are enforceable for 10 years, and can be renewed. Statistically, most of us, average Joes, who are in financial straights today will have much improved financial situation five years from now. That's the strategy. They can collect wheneve they think you have assets. I think the main way to avoid them is to keep your credit report with old information. If you don't apply for credit, they don't know where you work. If you apply for credit, you are giving them updated info. Your job, your address, and if you are applying for credit, you probably have some money. It is a game of psycholgoy. Don't play their game. When I got my credit report because I needed it for the bankrupcy ( to make sure I covered everything) my report had old employment and old address. Very Very old info because I had not applied for credit or even looked at my credit report for years. No activity but for collection agents looking at it.
