I can relate to you what I did, but I really can't say that you won't get sued. First of all, do they know where you and your wife work?? I live in a non garnishment state, so I did not have that worry. Your SOl is five years, when was the last time you paid the original creditor/s before the account became deliquent? If you are sued, you can ask for validation. No guarantee, but they usually cannot validate.
My story is as follows.
I had an accident and stopped paying my credit cards all at the same time. Tried reasoning with them, asked for hardship, but didn't do me much good. They got nasty, I put my phone on fax. I just ignored them for almost four years. I did not apply for credit or even look at my credit report. Eventually disconnected my phone when I had to leave town to care for a parent. (I guess his was kind of lucky) Just toward the end of the four years, I started getting consistent phone calls from one collection agency, I ignored them too. I also changed my phone number to stop their calls. By that time I was watching caller ID. The machine was picking up and they were leaving the usual messages. urgent that I call....blaaah blaaah.
When I changed my phone number, they called and yelled at my neighbor because he did not know my new phone number. He relucantly gave me the message to call. I did not. Things were very quiet for awhile, but for a letter (white piece of paper with the usual threats) I ignored. Eventually, my doorbell rang and I was served. My response was to file chapter 7. So, what made the difference?? This was a very aggressive agency. I changed my phone number and really made them mad???? For some reason they thought I had non exempt assets??? It's anybody's guess as to what trigged them to sue while somebody else did.
